Build Engineer around one Electric weapon route, then add Electric Turret or EMP Grenade to control the space your squad needs. With the starting roster, use SWAT and Tank as partners. If SWAT is already carrying damage, recruit Engineer as a control follower and fund one useful skill before widening his kit.
Weapon route: Taser, Tesla and Plasma
Start from Taser, develop Tesla, and choose an unlocked final branch that supports the run. The official 0.8 announcement introduced Plasma as a tier-three upgrade to the tier-two weapon.
The 0.8 announcement makes Plasma available from Engineer Rank 3. Check that permanent Rank gate before planning the upgrades needed during the run.
Use that route as the baseline when your upgrades already support Electric weapon damage. If choosing another available final branch, compare its current damage type and cadence with those investments before switching. A higher-tier name is useful only when you can develop its unlocked branch during this run.
Turret, EMP or Electrocution first?
- Electric Turret: establish it when you need pressure in an area you can circle safely. Keep an exit from that area instead of treating a deployed turret as a reason to stand still.
- EMP Grenade: choose it when crowd control creates time to reposition or finish weapon development. Its stun correction is documented in 0.8.
- Electrocution: invest when the damage and partner link fit the plan. The 1.0 notes reduced its early damage while retaining its final damage; that is a concrete reason not to assume an early unlock performs like a fully developed ability.
- Energy Shield: the ability-evolution announcement describes a projectile-blocking form. Select that branch for projectile pressure rather than expecting every Shield configuration to solve every threat.
For an Engineer leader, develop the weapon and one control skill. For a follower, establish the skill that fixes the carry's immediate problem, then keep the carry's damage route funded.
Partners and actual trigger skills
The Version 1.0 community reference documents these connections:
- Tank: EMP Grenade releases shotgun pellets; a separate link applies Electrified to enemies in contact. Look up the owning nodes for the part of the pairing you want.
- Huntress: Electrocution hits can produce Frost Arrows. Develop Electrocution when this interaction is part of your damage or control plan.
- Ghost: Electric Turret can release Kunai on deactivation, while Shuriken can gain Electric damage. This is a turret/projectile connection, not an automatic bonus to every Engineer weapon.
- Ranger: Incense and Marked links support Electrified. See the Ranger pairing guide for how to build around marked targets.
Choose a trio with skills you can actually unlock and develop. A diagram with more lines does not establish a stronger early run.
What to upgrade when the squad fails
If enemies surround the squad, move a control skill earlier and stop crossing the densest part of the horde to reach the next pickup. If ranged attacks repeatedly land, consider the projectile-blocking Shield form. If the squad survives but cannot finish an objective, put matching weapon damage ahead of another control-only investment.
Read whether Military Training or an item affects Engineer's weapon, his abilities, or all Survivors. Electric damage support and generic cooldown advice should still match the skill you are developing; the separate-stat system makes the recipient matter.
Progression and mode choices
Engineer earns Specialization while present and through his upgrades, so playing him as a follower can develop the permanent tree. Check the Rank and node gate before planning a final weapon or cross-Survivor link.
Start with the beginner trio. For Boss Rush, finish useful damage before the ten-minute finale; extra control is a response to a survival problem, not a substitute for boss damage. Save the objective and Rank in Squad Builder.
